Magie Lancôme. The Best Elvis impersonator contest

Vintage Magie (supposedly from 70’s) smells of an apricot kernel: sour and poisonously inedible. May be it’s gone off. Both vintage and modern versions resemble quite well what Magie was designed to be:

Magie Lancôme.

Opium no more

The Tanuki dog boiled the granny, put her skin on and began fooling the village people...
A Japanese folk tale
Loreal has acquired YSL perfume business, reformulated Opium and released it in new design in a company of some Belle d'Opium... with much artificial pathos.

Opium

Belle d'Opium.

Atlas, Texas and Virginia cedarwood

Good pencils are made with cedarwood. It’s the smell of a boring lesson when the only legal entertainment was to sharpen a pencil and this is how the essence of the Texas cedar smells like.  The Moroccan cedar doesn’t smell of pencil shavings – there’s much more to it:

Violets, wasabi and crispy dollars

Parma violets…where is it from? Leo Tolstoy? Maupassant? Why is it that a nineteenth century romantic heroine is so often followed by violets aroma?

In perfumery a violet is either a synthetic reproduction of the flower scent or more often it’s leaves. The natural violet leaves absolu smells of new leather boots insides. Its synthetic replacements (methyl ionone(s), alpha irone, alpha cetone, Iralia®, nonadienol, undecavertol, etc.) smell harsher and clearer, crispy as a radish or even pungent like wasabi. Crispy, green and sharp – just like that smell of a tight pack of recently printed dollars.

Vivara (Pucci). Transparent narcissus

Vivara EDP could have been a splendid perfume had they put all the announced ingredients in proper generous amounts. In reality it’s a transparent 15-munute narcissus (jonquil ?) very reminiscent of jasmine sambac with a light honey shade. Not worth the money.

Vivara (Pucci).

Aqua Allegoria Flora Nymphea. Wet Lilac

It seems this is a mix of fleur d'oranger, Florazone (for that garden-after-the-rain feel) and some synthetic berry (maybe dewberry).

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Aqua Allegoria Flora Nymphea.

Paris (Balenciaga), chic sells!

The ads are very good. Mlle Gainsbourg epitomizes the idea of timeless Paris chic perfectly.
As to the perfume itself, well… they say it’s a violet, but it's rather pink pepper in the style of Elle (YSL) which gradually mutates into a sweet white musk with a shade of sandal. All synthetic. For the real violet try  Cuir Pleine Fleur (Heeley).
Seems that with the advertisement campaign Paris smells much better than without.

Angela Flanders and Sunday flower market

Just off the London City on Columbia road there’s a busy flower market each Sunday. Apart from offers such as 50 tulips for ₤5 (and you can haggle) another interesting thing there is the perfume boutique of Angela Flanders

Angela Flanders,

The Cinquieme Sens school II. Almost all the secrets…

One more course in the perfume school and now I can almost professionally smell passers-by and almost professionally suffer from mediocre perfume used by the majority. Synthetic musks which in a shop hide at the very bottom of a perfume bottle break free on the street. It seems these rancid detergent like musks is the most common sillage left by a woman under 40 passing by. Mature ladies prefer an ambery drydown (vanilla, benzoin, tolu). Try smell yourself…

Aveda. The smell of Ayurveda

Aveda’s aromas inhabit the natural and goof for you region of the perfume universe – either clever marketing or certain degree of enlightenment.
Their natural aromas can be blended with each other or added to creams, etc.– Aveda gives you freedom to experiment with:

Aveda.

Ormonde Jayne

If you happen to be around Old Bond Street try to find the Ormonde Jayne perfume boutique in one of the Victorian shopping arcades. The shop is really worth a visit - calm, all dark wood and mirrors, soft light vanishing in heavy square bottles. The bottles are full of expensive natural materials and feminine floral forms. British luxurious elegance as it is - very “lady’.

Ormonde Jayne

Honey. Any?

The honey accord in a perfume is either a synthetic trick or a byproduct of some natural flower material.

There are few perfumes which have “honey”, “beeswax”, etc. in their titles. For example:

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind

A story of a perfume maniac! Sounds promising…
Alas, from the perfume hobby point of view there’s nothing really interesting. Mandy Aftel’s Essence & Alchemy although being non-fiction gives a much more exciting account of perfume history on the whole including Grenouille’s period.
From the interest in maniacs' point of view – Silence of the Lambs – that’s the ultimate reading for getting inside the mind  of a aesthetically obsessed maniac.

A steaming pot of tuberose

Perfumers compare the note of tuberose with the smell of rubber, decay and other weird stuff. Hence perhaps the words Criminelle and Carnal in perfume titles. Apparently there’s one more possible comparison: a steaming pot of certain cereal with butter still melting in it. The English call it buckwheat, the French sarrasin or blé noir and Japanese make those brown Soba noodles from it. Freshly boiled buckwheat gives off that thick buttery aroma the tuberose.

The Perfect Scent).

The Cinquieme Sens perfume school. Experiments

My perfume hobby requires ever more serious input now. The expansion of my perfume collection has been deliberately limited by the size of the shelf I chose for it. That space is packed now. So what’s left is collecting something intangible. Now I want to be able to read the perfume composition, define the family, etc.

Just before Christmas I was lucky to be on a 2-day almost professional course in the Cinquieme Sens perfume school in Paris (next to the Eiffel Tower, the photo above was taken from the school's entrance). 2 days for 7 hours. They start with unexciting stuff about the current industry players and its inner workings. Skip that and read Chandler Burr’s The Emperor of Scent and The Perfect Scent for a full exciting account.
